What Is Optical Communication?

Optical communication is a technology that converts electrical signals into light to transmit data, and then converts the light signals back into electrical signals at the receiving end.

Compared to copper-based transmission, optical communication delivers data at dramatically higher speeds while significantly reducing power consumption.
As a result, it is becoming a core infrastructure technology for AI data centers.

Why Micro LED Instead of Lasers?

Conventional optical communication systems have relied on copper and lasers as light sources.

However, as AI data centers increasingly demand ultra-high bandwidth and low-power operation, the limitations of traditional copper-based communication are becoming more apparent.

Micro LED is now emerging as a practical alternative capable of overcoming these limitations.

Key Micro LED Technologies for Optical Communications

For Micro LED to be utilized in optical communications, technologies such as ultra-small chip sizes, high-speed modulation capability, low beam divergence, and high-density integration are essential.

The following four technological elements are the key enablers for optical communication applications.
