Violeds Technology Applied to Natural Vitamin D Generation Technology, Indoor Livestock Production
ANSAN, South Korea – Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (“SETi”) and Seoul Viosys (KOSDAQ: 092190), the leading global providers of UV LED technology, announced that SETi and FarrPro have developed and tested ‘Violeds’ technology to modern pig farrowing facilities to supplement piglet vitamin D3 synthesis. Seoul Viosys and SETi have researched and mass-produced Violeds for the past 20 years. FarrPro, Inc. is a U.S. based manufacturer of precision livestock farming solutions for the animal production sector.
Vitamin D need for pigs can be met by intake of supplementalsnatural sunlight. However, unlike sunlight, generally used LEDs and conventional artificial lighting make it difficult for animals to naturally produce vitamin D in an indoor setting. Violeds technology is optimized for piglets to produce vitamin D3 naturally. This result is expected to help healthy production when applied to other livestock as well such as fish and birds raised indoors without sunlight. Violeds light source could also be necessary for aquariums and pets to maintain a healthy life.
This experiment (Effect of UVB light supplementation on pre-weaning piglet vitamin D3 synthesis and productivity) was conducted at Iowa State University in the United States as part of Dr. Ben Smith’s doctoral dissertation (Technology and assessment techniques for swine farrowing facility management), and the effect was confirmed by experimenting with piglets that did not receive sunlight and piglets exposed to the Violeds. The results showed an improvement of vitamin D3 in piglets exposed to the Violeds technology without causing sunburnsother negative impacts. The results of this experiment have been submitted to the journal Animals. This technology will be highlighted at the 2021 World Pork Expo (June 9-11 Des Moines, Iowa USA) and the related commercial product VitaLight™ is planned to be released on January 1st, 2022.
“Vitamin D is essential to the function of every major system of the body. Unfortunately, animals raised indoors don’t have access to sunlight and supplementation is difficult. VitaLight™ will change that, passively reducing illness, injury, antibiotic use and stress in livestock, producing animals that are healthier, happier and more profitable,” said Amos Petersen, CEO, FarrPro, Inc.
Research on the properties and usefulness of light is an important area that needs to be researched. More than 10 Nobel Prizes have been awarded in this field since Dr. Finsen of Denmark received the first in 1903. ‘Sunlike’ light, similar to natural sunlight, has been proven to improve sleep, eye health, and concentration. In addition, using Violeds light can improve skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, and psoriasis, as well as improve mood through pain relief and endorphin production.
